As Aristotle once observed, nature abhors a vacuum. This is true in our responses to climate and the conversations we choose to have in the media. Most of what we see in the news about the resource sector on climate change is overwhelmingly negative. Is the public getting the whole story, or are the absence of conversations with the media from the sector creating a vacuum other voices are filling? Is it time for more positive voices from the resource sector to fill the void?

Towards net zero

Political opinions may vary about a response to climate change, but few don’t believe that real action is now required. However, even governments are under fire about the speed of change. Conversations in the mainstream media and social media need to involve more voices from the resource sector. The absence of such voices will see the resource sector increasingly viewed as the villain in this story. But does the public have the whole story? Is your resource company making positive changes that will help drive the net-zero target?

The changes we’ve made. The changes we will make

It is clear that a real response to climate change will be made incrementally. From the beginning of civilisation, infrastructure and human activities have had negative impacts on the planet. Only in recent decades have we come to understand that these impacts are an existential threat. The public is rightfully impatient to see change. This impatience is driving both political and policy changes across the globe.

The challenge is that many of the changes we need to make will take time. We need to change consumption habits and how we generate and use energy. The resources sector has an important and active role to play in this process, with many already making big changes. It’s vital that you participate in the conversation, providing stories on what you are doing and plan to do in the near future. The media can be an ally in this conversation; if you provide them with factual stories and resources, they need to tell them.

Are you one of the good guys?

You cannot take responsibility for the entire resource sector. Some are climate change denialists and actively disseminate false and misleading information, but many understand change is necessary and are already on the path. The media and the public need to hear these stories. They need to understand some changes take time, but changes are being made. They also need to understand that the resource sector plays an important role in providing the raw materials that drive many of the technologies essential to climate response. Actively participating in the conversation on climate change is not only the right thing do to; it's also good business. Your Lookatmedia™ centre plays an active role in getting these stories into the media.

How to tell your story

Is your company divesting from businesses that impact climate change negatively? Are you working with communities to support their climate responses? There are many positive and real ways in which resource companies are responding to climate change. Lookatmedia™ is where you get to tell your stories in an environment that's media friendly and drives more media coverage.
